Are bakers artists?

We think so!

Shout-out to the bakers and staff on Fat Tuesday!

Shout-out to the bakers and staff on Fat Tuesday!

Who else has a line outside their door at 4:00 am in 15 degree weather?

We waited in line for our paczki’s (pronounced “poonch-key”), which are pastries similar to doughnuts, traditional to our Polish heritage. Fellow patrons at Weber’s Bakery (“how long have you been coming here? forever!”) shared stories about bakeries, neighborhoods, parishes, family, and tradition. And even at that early hour, there were lots of smiles in anticipation of sharing their bounty with friends and family, just like years gone by.

The bakery is so busy on Fat Tuesday, the business phone says they aren’t answering calls until Wednesday – and no one minds!

Fat Tuesday (“Mardi Gras” in French) is the last day of eating rich foods before the fasting of the Lenten season. Over 2 billion people, or about one-third of the world’s population, are Christian, who celebrate the beginning of Lent tomorrow, Ash Wednesday. Here’s hoping that the simple tradition of Fat Tuesday, followed by the power of Lent, cast a positive influence on the tragedies in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, some of which are committed in the name of religion.
